Virtual card fraud rises to a worrying level

.

There was a significant increase in the number of threats of financial fraud in Brazil in the first half of 2022. This is what the recently released semi-annual report by Apura Cyber Intelligence shows, which provides an overview of cyber crimes and cybersecurity in the country in 2022.

Financial fraud via the internet has the main objective of extracting data that allow criminals to acquire credentials and, in this way, subtract money from victims, which can be in small amounts or even larger amounts.

In order to understand the scenario of cyber financial crimes in the country, Apura used data from BTTng, the company’s cyber threat intelligence tool that evaluates billions of pieces of information in the search for patterns that may indicate some type of threat and alert when malicious activities are detected.

Thus, it is possible through terms, for example, to identify patterns and issue security alerts. One of the terms identified by BTTng was “fake screen”which is mainly associated with the marketing of fake web pages identical to organizations and entities that scammers want to attract victims.

In the first half of 2022, compared to the first half of 2021, the search for the term or mention of “fake screen” rose 67%. These screens are used to trick victims into believing that they are accessing the original site, when in fact they are logging in with their credential, and even credit card numbers, a fake page.

“Fake screens are an important link in the chain of a series of frauds, so they are highly sought after merchandise on forums, chats, social networks, etc.”.

Sandro Suffert, CEO of Apura.

Another term with many related events was “swindler”. Scammers (more specifically “selfie scammers”) seek to circumvent the need to send selfies for procedures such as opening accounts or applying for credit cards or loans online. Compared to the first half of 2021, the increase was about 659% in the search for or mention of this type of fraud.

Attempted financial fraud with cards, such as credit, debit, prepaid, which are quite common, had an increase of approximately 637% in the number of occurrences identified by BTTng compared to the first half of 2021. Worldwide, the system collected information of 2,284,797 cards, of which 283,031 originated in Brazil, an increase of more than 46% in relation to the number of national cards identified between 2021 and 2022.

“It is important to note that this does not necessarily mean that the number of frauds related to these schemes has grown at the same rate. But the growth in numbers is a pretty strong indication of increased interest in them from the cybercriminal biome.”

Sandro Suffert, CEO of Apura.

The report also presents analysis and information about the cybercrime scenario in the world, especially taking into account some factors such as the Russia-Ukraine war, the “end” of the largest cyber-terrorist group in the world, Conti, and its developments, new types of threats and vulnerabilities, all based on real numbers and extracted from BTTng.
