Revolut: thousands of users with data stolen by hackers

We are going through a phase of high volume hacker attacks on numerous large scale companies. After an attack on TAP was revealed, now it was Revolut’s turn to confirm that it was a victim of hackers. Speaking to TechCrunch, a representative of the startup confirmed that hackers were able to gain access to a small percentage (0.16%) of users’ private data. Although the percentage is very low, it is equivalent to around 32 thousand users, considering that the company has approximately 20 million customers. The same representative confirmed that they identified the attack late on September 10th, having managed to isolate the attack and neutralize its effects the following morning. Official figures revealed by the company to the authorities in Lithuania (the country where it has its banking license) state that 50,150 customers were affected by the attack. These include 20,687 in the European Economic Area.

According to the publication on the Lithuanian website of the State Data Protection Inspectorate, among the data obtained by the hackers are:

    • Full name
    • Address
    • Email
    • Phone number
    • Partial information on debit cards
    • Private data of your accounts

Revolut has already confirmed that all affected users have already been contacted, being informed that the confidentiality of their personal data was compromised during the attack. The company will continue with a detailed investigation to understand what allowed this attack to be successful, so that it can better defend in the future. They also recall that under no circumstances do they send text messages or call their customers, nor do they ask for login data, with the incident as a justification. For now, the only confirmation left by the startup is that there was no movement of funds, ensuring that its customers’ money remains present and safe.
