The Qatar World Cup runs from November 20 to December 18. Prior to the celebration of the event, Qatar developed numerous infrastructures, such as sports complexes and hotel facilities, and facilitated the distribution of supporters across host cities, allowing supporters to gather and sell alcohol.
This sporting event has been dubbed the World Security, since Qatar is a particularly safe country, and for that reason it is assumed that fewer elements of the security forces on the ground will be needed. Nonetheless, taking into account the size of the event, which will take place in eight sports stadiums with a capacity of between 40,000 and 80,000 people, important measures were implemented of security
- Launch of “Operation Shield of the World Cup”, which integrates the security forces of 13 countries in the international police security device by land, sea and air.
- It was also incorporated into use of drones and other technologies designed to mitigate threats in airspace.
- In addition, the hotels have strengthened their security measures in the face of potential thefts aimed at guests’ high-value goods. As an example, the English football federation advised supporters to adopt self-protection measures against the potential theft of their valuables, in addition to recommending the hiring of private security services to minimize the materialization of this risk.
Prosegur’s Intelligence and Prospective Unit identifies three major threats that may have an impact on event security:
- Massive attendance at stadiums and surroundings
Analysts point to a particular risk in accessing the stadiums where the games will take place. It is likely that half an hour before the start of each game – coinciding with the cessation of the sale of alcohol by authorized entities – the accesses present crowds that increase the risk of intrusions, avalanches and acts of vandalism resulting from tension between supporters.
- Increase in property crime
Given the arrival of international supporters and the large number of people on the streets, in hotels and commercial establishments, it is likely that there will be an increase in thefts, especially in supporter areas, near sports stadiums and places of assembly. Furthermore, the mandatory use of the mobile application to access the stadiums implies a series of technological risks, such as schemes associated with online sales, hacking of devices and misuse of personal data.
- Calls to boycott the World Cup
Since the announcement of Qatar as a host country, criticism of the country has multiplied and appeals from NGOs and sectors of civil society to carry out mobilizations and individual acts of protest
FIFA has issued a general appeal to supporters and teams to avoid practices that could disturb public order.
Finally, it is worth remembering that, despite the implemented security efforts, the significant media impact of this event can be an attraction factor for criminals looking to project their criminal actions internationally.
