How many we are, where we are and how we live. Initially, the role of the Census seems to have the objective of answering the previous questions. However, it is much more than that — the result creates a true portrait of who the Brazilians and Brazilians who live in the country are.
This analysis goes beyond the quantitative population and focuses on understanding how the population lives, works and relates.
What is the Census?

The Census seeks to collect data on a specific population. For example, there are surveys related to education, agricultural performance and voter statistics. This is an important distinction because, in this case, the Demographic Census, as its name suggests, focuses on the investigation of demographic, social and economic data. In addition to generating data on the Brazilian population, the results obtained have several purposes.
In this case, the number of inhabitants in each municipality is the variable that defines the number of councilors that can be elected. The number of municipalities, on the other hand, establishes the number of mayors.
This information is also essential for the formulation of public policies on education, infrastructure and health. The Census also affects the allocation of resources to municipalities and states, which is essential for public accounts.
How does the collection process work?

The Census is carried out every ten years and the latest version of the report was released in 2010. However, due to the pandemic, which made the research unfeasible, the collection will start in August 2022.
Until the month of October, when the conclusion of the first stage of the research, around 180 thousand researchers will visit Brazilian homes in all states of the country. According to the IBGE program, the objective is to visit 75 million households during the survey.
As you can imagine, this is a large-scale operation that requires the allocation of countless resources to guarantee its conclusion. For this reason, planning begins much earlier to ensure that IBGE has personnel, materials and a budget for its execution.
What types of research are carried out?

Most of the selected sample participates in a survey whose model is called generalized. Thus, the questions have a demographic character and seek to know the following information about the residents:
the sex;
- the age;
- the level of education/education; and
the income. )
In addition, aspects of the household are also analyzed based on access to water, electricity and internet. The number of rooms, the possession of certain appliances and the presence of employees in the residence also help to create a clear picture of the Brazilian.
Part of this sample, about 11%, is selected to answer a more complete questionnaire. In this case, the topics addressed are work, migration, composition of family groups and religion.
Therefore, this process is a very rich source of information to generate increasingly complete and reliable studies. Although the next survey will only be conducted in ten years, we can always count on the modernization of the Census in search of efficiency and reliability.
