Quest Software, a global provider of systems management, protection and security software, in collaboration with the Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG), has released the 2022 Data Governance and Empowerment Report. The annual study highlights key challenges and innovations in data governance and management and DataOps.
The report found that data quality has overtaken security as the top driver of governance initiatives, with 41% of respondents agreeing that business decision making is fundamentally dependent on reliable, quality information. At the same time, however, 45% of IT leaders say quality is the biggest ROI challenge in governance efforts. Although they recognize their importance, they are struggling to improve their quality and, therefore, the ability to leverage them strategically and maximally, in practice.
“Users at all technical levels have an advantage when they have full visibility, control and confidence in their information. Reliable information and efficient operations have never been more influential in determining the success or failure of business goals. When people don’t have access to high-quality data, the confidence and guidance to use it correctly, it’s virtually impossible for them to achieve the desired results.”
Marco Fontenelle, LATAM General Manager at Quest Software.
The report also revealed that business leaders struggle not just to understand it, but to locate and use it in the first place, with 42% of respondents saying that at least half of it was “dark data” – held back by the organization, but unused, uncontrollable and inaccessible. An influx and lack of visibility often lead to bottlenecks, impeding the accuracy and effectiveness of the operation.
While data visibility and observability challenges differ across industries, DataOps has been widely recognized as the premier solution for driving enablement. Of the executives interviewed, 9 out of 10 agreed that strengthening DataOps capabilities improves their quality, visibility, and access issues in their business.
The biggest opportunities to improve DataOps accuracy and efficiency are investing in automated technologies and deploying time-saving tools like metadata management. Currently, only 37% of respondents describe their DataOps processes as automated, and an equally small proportion report having automated cataloging and mapping today (36% and 35%, respectively).
“Today’s companies are virtually forced to be data-driven and evidence-based in their strategies, yet they still face significant obstacles that prevent their people from being fully empowered to bring them into every decision. Organizations that invest in building a culture data driven first – powered by automation in DataOps processes, with high-quality information, governance and enterprise-wide accessibility – to drive business success will have the upper hand,” concludes Rule.
Richard Rule, LATAM Director of Data Empowerment at Quest Software.
